The finalists of the third edition of the Climate Leaders Awards were announced today. Winners include individuals, companies, and entities that have excelled in the field of climate activism over the past year. The initiative was launched by the Spanish Leaders of The Climate Reality Project, which was founded by former US Vice President Al Gore to raise awareness of the climate emergency.
The awards gala will take place on March 24 at 7:00 pm and will be hosted by journalists Manuel Campo Vidal and Laura Férrer. Due to precautionary measures taken in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event will take place virtually and will be broadcast from the Climate Leaders Awards platform (www.climateawards.eu). The gala will be an emissions-neutral event thanks to collaboration with LG and its Smart Green project, which means that trees will be planted to compensate for the already reduced emissions generated by the online event.
The Climate Leaders Awards have been managed by The Climate Reality Project Europe Team Spain for the last three years. Award recipients from the previous editions include: a Spanish politician Teresa Ribera, actor Jon Kortajarena, the Spanish Green Growth Group, the WWF, and Greta Thunberg.

Javier and Carlos Bardem, recognized as Committed Artists of the Year for their proven public commitment to addressing the climate emergency through outstanding work on the film “Sanctuary,” dedicated to areas most affected by climate change, such as Antarctica.
Member of the European Parliament Jytte Guteland, European rapporteur for the European Climate Law, recognized as an International Climate Personality for the proposal to raise the EU emissions reduction target by 2030 in line with the scientific consensus. Ms. Guteland’s was one of the key voices in the vote to adopt the European Commission’s 55% greenhouse gas emissions reduction by 2030.
We Mean Business director Maria Mendiluce, recognized as the Spanish Climate Personality for her leadership and engagement in the business transition towards a low-carbon economy.
The ethical fashion brand SKFK, recognized as the winner of the Emissions Reduction Project category for an innovative concept of measuring and communicating its environmental impact within the product life cycle.
Director of the Ecology and Global Change Department at the National Museum of Natural Sciences Fernando Valladares, recognized as the winner of the Research and Education Initiative category for his leadership and advocacy work.
Fundación Renovables, recognized in the Non-governmental Organization category for its continuous leadership in advocating for the adoption of renewable energy technologies in Spain.
L’Oreal, recognized as the Company Committed to the Fight Against Climate Change for its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions of its supply chain, resulting in an AAA rating in the Carbon Disclosure Project ranking for five consecutive years.
City of Valladolid, recognized as the Most Prominent Local Administration for its continuous work to improve mobility, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and implement sustainability practices in the municipality administration.
Ecogestiona, recognized as winner in the Media / Communication Program category for climate emergency awareness raising through a series of 300 radio programs on economics and sustainability.
Scouts from Spain, recognized as winner in the Young Climate Personality category for environmental activism and inspiring a love of nature among young people.
GreenMko Green Management Technology, recognized as winner in the Start-Up category for the development of environmental performance measurement tools, including a carbon footprint calculator.
Moreover, The Climate Leaders Awards jury voted to grant Climate Ambassador status to Mariano Barroso, president of the Spanish Film Academy, for promoting sustainability practices in the film industry, and Isabel Jiménez, tele5 journalist and author, for her activism and recently published book And What Would You Do to Save the Planet?
As in the two earlier events of the Climate Leaders Awards, the winners will receive a special, yet to be released work representing Mother Earth, created by artist Miguel Vallinas.
The Climate Leaders Awards jury is chaired by Alvaro Rodríguez (The Climate Reality Project Europe National Coordinator for Spain) and consists of the following members: Alicia Tórrego (Director of Fundación Conama), Luis Jiménez Herrero (President of a sustainability organization ASYPS), Mercedes Martín (Television Meteorologist for Matinal de A3 Noticias), Sergio de Otto (patron of the Fundación Renovables), Cristina Monge (Sociologist and Political Scientist), Antonio Lucio (Professor of Mobility and Urban Strategies at the EOI Business School), and Carmen Domínguez (CEO of Mykado Media).
