Co-Creating a just future: highlights from our 2026 Climate Justice Training
The energy transition is no longer a distant promise, it is happening right now. But as we pivot away from fossil fuels, a vital question remains: Who is this transition actually serving?
This year’s two-week Climate Justice Training tackled this exact challenge, exploring the energy transition through a human rights and equity lens. Over six immersive sessions, a cohort of passionate changemakers gathered to ensure that as our energy systems transform, no one is left behind.
Human rights, nature, and local realities
Our journey began by examining the human scale of the climate crisis. We looked closely at how climate impacts hit marginalized communities hardest - from women facing disproportionate risks during disasters to low-income households struggling with energy access. We explored the Rights of Nature, recognizing that true justice must extend to ecosystems, waterways, and wildlife. Crucially, we connected these global realities to local impacts right here in Europe, where heatwaves, floods, and droughts are growing ever more severe.
From strategy to tangible action
To turn powerful ideas into real-world momentum, guest speakers brought invaluable practical insights:
Inclusive and ethical campaigning: Ishtar Lakhani (Rogue Union) inspired us to build campaigns that move hearts.
Examining impacts: Angela Asuncion (Resource Justice Network) and Fons Janssen (EU Climate Pact) illuminated the complex realities of the transition: from mining repercussions to local Dutch energy initiatives.
Proven solutions: We drew inspiration from global tools like climate litigation, energy cooperatives, and democratic assemblies, learning from inspiring organizations like DemNet, ZEZ, and Pacific Island Students Fighting Climate Change.
The cohort put theory into practice through the Dear City Love Letter action, crafting personal appeals to local decision-makers. Together, participants sent 11 emails, 3 physical letters, and 3 social media posts demanding equitable local climate action!

Carrying the fire forward
Climate justice brings together people with immense heart, courage, and vision. To our incredible 2026 cohort: Congratulations! Thank you for bringing your energy, passion, and commitment to building a transition that is not just green, but truly just for all.
